Prevalence of Learning Disabilities in India
1/10
people are estimated to having to have some form of learning disability
10-15% of the Indian population, or approximately 130-200 million people, may have some form of reading disability.
Studies specifically focusing on dyslexia have reported varying prevalence rates, ranging from 6% to 16% among school-aged children.

We conducted a broad study of childhood learning disorders. Due to project scope, we focused on Dyslexia and Dysgraphia.
Problem Statement
The lack of early intervention due to fragmented processes and poor collaboration delays vital support, negatively impacting 6-10 year old students with learning disabilities and their academic outcomes.
We analyzed the current multi-stage diagnostic and treatment pathway in India. The current system is fragmented and inefficient, hindering effective and equitable intervention.

Individual Education Plan
Discussion between parents, psychologists, teachers, special educators and in some cases the child
Set long term academic and behavioral goals which are then broken down to shorter term goals.
Continuous coordination between different people is difficult. Finding the right specialist can be challenging.

Shadow teachers
Teachers aren’t always best equipped to help every student. Singling out students can lead to bullying.

Formal Screening
By Special Educator
Checks if reading, writing, and math skills match age expectations and refers for formal assessment if significant discrepancies are found.
The ratio of special educators to children is less

Formal Evaluation
By Psychologist
Checks if reading, writing, and math skills match age expectations. Looks for specific challenges and recommends treatment accordingly.
Getting parents to admit their child needs help can be tough. Student should feel comfortable and not isolated from peers

Informal Screening
By teacher
Checks all possible reason a child might be facing problems in class
Large class sizes make screening difficult. Students feel singled out during individual screenings.
Some tests are tedious and should be kid-friendly, not feel like tests.
We conceptualized a system leveraging an OCR engine to analyze student assignments for learning difficulty patterns. We also designed a coordinated IEP process.
My focus was on the service design framework and the UX/UI of the teacher-facing application, ensuring seamless integration and a user-centric experience.

The system scans student assignments, detecting patterns indicative of learning difficulties.
It provides automated alerts to teachers, streamlining early interventions and parent communication.
The platform offers in-app professional referrals and resources for a coordinated Individual Education Plan.
It also facilitates assessment scans and continuous follow-up.

Our research highlighted the urgent need for an integrated, data-driven system to overcome systemic inefficiencies and streamline the support process. The project's innovative approach was recognized with an award at the NMIMS Symposium 2024.
